Basement Flooring - What Are Your
Choices?
If you are planning a basement finishing project, one of the
main areas will be the type of flooring you will be putting in.
Basement flooring is an important part of any home improvement
project to be sure, and really needs to be thought out. The
question most people have is what type of flooring is best?
Here's a look at some of the more common choices to help give
you some help.
Before going out and purchasing any kind of basement
flooring products you will want to consider what your basement
is being used for. Is it for a family room, laundry room,
bedrooms, workshop, etc? Each one of these choices has their
own particular flooring needs. What works well in a workshop
would not work well in a bedroom.
Workshop - If you plan on having a workshop downstairs, the
concrete basement floor will make your best choice. Naturally,
since your basement already has a concrete floor, your costs
are next to nothing. A concrete floor also makes for an
excellent storage room. If you like, you can also install a
vinyl floor in the room.
Family rooms/Bedrooms/Rec Rooms - Your choices for this type
of basement flooring can include vinyl tile or a faux wood
floor. These types of floors stand up to high amounts of
traffic and are easy to install as well.
What Types Of Basement Flooring Are Not Recommended?
Real Wood - Since a basement can easily have moisture at
times, using real wood is not recommended. You can also get a
mold problem underneath the wood and cause it to have to be
taken out. You can imagine the expense involved there.
Ceramic Floors - This type of floor is beautiful to have
upstairs, but in the basement it doesn't work out well at all.
First, ceramic becomes very slick when moisture is present, and
that is a real possibility in the basement. Other disadvantages
include the difficulty in cleaning a ceramic floor as well as
how easily tiles can be broken if something heavy is dropped on
them.
You can find out much more on basement flooring options by
going online and doing a simple search. The most important
thing to keep in mind is to take some take and make your right
decision for your particular needs. Don't discount the
importance of flooring in your basement. You'll be satisfied
for years down the road.
